Exploring Application of Acupuncture and Moxibustion for Shoulder Pain and Stiffness Based on Theory of Resolving Water Stagnation
Resolving water stagnation originates from the Five-Stagnation theory in Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon.Water stagnation refers to the congealing and non-dispersion of cold water, which can lead to the congealing of Qi,blood, and body fluids within body, causing blockages in the meridians and resulting in pain and stiffness in the shoulder.Resolving water stagnation is the main therapeutic principle, involving promoting circulation and dispersing stagnation, which can be achieved through warming Yang, reinforcing Earth, and facilitating transformation.Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon emphasizes the use of filiform needles to unblock meridians and harmonize Qi and blood in treating pain and stiffness. This study, based on the theory of resolving water stagnation, applies needle-warming moxibustion and other warming external therapies in treatment of shoulder pain and stiffness to transform the cold water stagnation internally.Coupled with shoulder movements,it promotes the circulation of Qi and blood, strengthens vital-Qi and dispels pathogenic factors.Clinical cases are used to illustrate the application of resolving water stagnation in clinical practice, providing guidance for the treatment of should pain and stiffness with acupuncture and moxibustion.
