Discussion on Abdominal Acupuncture Treatment for Depression due to Liver Depression and Spleen Deficiency Based on'Axis and Periphery'Theory
The human body revolves around the five Zang-organs,with the continuous circulation of Qi among them, allowing bodily activities to proceed ceaselessly. The five Zang-organs house five spirits and govern the five emotions. When the Qi of the Zang-organ is abundant and harmonious, the emotions and thoughts can be peaceful and undisturbed. The five Zang-organs correspond to the five phases, forming the relationship between the center and the four directions, the axis and the periphery, with Spleen and Stomach occupying the center as the axis, and Liver,Heart,Lung and Kindey as the periphery in the four directions. The human body also exhibits an axis-periphery relationship, with the trunk as the axis and the limbs as the periphery.Patients of this type not only exhibit typical psychiatric symptoms, but also show varying degrees of abdominal manifestations, indicating a disturbance in both physical and mental aspects. Therefore, treatment should be approached holistically by selecting appropriate acupoints and techniques based on the principles of regulating the axis and it related periphery. In clinical practice of abdominal acupuncture, the main selection of points includes Zhongwan(RN12),Xiawan(RN10),Qihai(RN6),Guanyuan(RN4),Qixue(KI 13)and Tianzhu(BL10),focusing on regulating the function of Spleen and Stomach to restore the rotation of axis.Additionally, points such as Taichong(LR3),Hegu(LI4),Neiguan(PC6),Sanyinjiao(SP6)and Zusanli(ST36)on the extremities are used to harmonize Heart,Liver,Lung and Kidney, facilitating the ascending and descending of the four dimensions. The synergistic effect of these points promotes the smooth movement of the axis, thus alleviating the symptoms of depression.
