ZHANG Zhongjing's Intention on Needling LR14 in Treatise on Cold Damage and Miscellaneous Diseases
In the Treatise on Cold Damage and Miscellaneous Diseases by Zhongjing,the most frequently mentioned acupoint is undoubtedly the Qimen(LR14)point.Throughout the ages,medical experts have often interpreted its usage from the perspective of regulating Liver meridian Qi and opening the gateway of the menstrual cycle to explain its significance.This study explores the meaning of LR14,its tropism feature and specific attributes of acupoints from a textual and academic perspective on acupuncture in the Han and Wei dynasties.It suggests that the naming of LR14 is derived from the names of Han Dynasty military officials,symbolizing its characteristic of guarding the Heart.Its main characteristic stem from specific attributes as it serves as the gathering point of Liver-Qi,and needling it can dissipate the excess heat of blood.This study analyzes Zhongjing's description of needling LR14,indicating its use in treating symptoms such as cold-induced collapse due to stagnation of Qi and blood,and safeguarding Heart.It is also used in cases of Liver overacting on Lungs and Liver overacting on Spleen to disperse excess Liver-Qi;for delirium,it is utilized to protect Heart,awaken Shen,and dissipate heat and evil of Liver-blood,employing acupuncture techniques to quickly revive consciousness in emergency situations.
