33S is a thermo-sensitive genic male sterile(TGMS)line special for late hybrid rice developed by Hunan Rice Research Institute.It has excellent characteristics such as ideal plant type,low critical sterility-inducing temperature(＜23 ℃)and good outcrossing habits.It was registered by Hunan Crop Variety Appraisal Committee in 2012,and granted the plant new variety rights in 2016.As of 2022,36 hybrid combinations derived from 33S had passed the varietal approval at or above the provincial level,of which 15 ones had passed the national varietal approval.The hybrid combinations of 33S have good plant type,wide adaptability,fine grain quality,high yield and certain resistance to diseases and insect pests.From 2015 to 2021,the planting area of the 33S series of hybrid combinations in three provinces of Hunan,Jiangxi and Hubei exceeded 1.282 2 million hectares,which is of great significance for ensuring double-cropping rice production in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River.
