The relationship between actual and perceived motor competence and physical activity and sedentary behavior of school-aged children
In order to examine the relationship between actual and perceived motor competence, physical ac-tivity,and sedentary behavior among school-aged children,518 children aged 6 to 10 from Jinhua City,Zhe-jiang Province were assessed. The evaluations included the test of gross motor development, the pictorial scale of perceived competence and social acceptance for young children, the self-perception profile for children, and accelerometer data. The evaluations results showed that:1)actual motor competence in locomotor skills(β=0.140,P<0.05),object-control skills(β=0.112,P<0.05),and perceived motor competence(β=0.149,P<0.05)were significant positive predictors of moderate to vigorous physical activity among children;2)actual motor competence in locomotor skills was a significant negative predictor of sedentary behavior(β=-0.202,P<0.05).In contrast, perceived motor competence was not significantly associated with sedentary behavior in children. The evaluations was then concluded as follws:actual and perceived motor competence were key factors that impacted the physical activity and sedentary behavior of school-age children. In order to support their development, schools, families, and communities would be expected to ensure that children have access to resources and environments that promote both actual and perceived motor competence.
