The Formation,Evolution and Function of Print Titles in Ancient Novels from the Perspective of Publishing
From the perspective of the process of publishing and engraving in bookstores,the titles of picture in the earliest novels with the image above and text below were extracted and summarized from the text by the bookstore owners or editors,and used as a guide for artists to draw prints.During Wanli period of Ming Dynasty,Zhou Yuexiao,the owner of a bookstore in the Jinling area,advocated the concept of adding images to the program,forming a new type of graphic-text relationship that was different from the printmaking of Jianben novels.The back to back image titles became the mainstream of printmaking titles,and the subsequent image titles of couplet style,title style,and postscript style were important supple-ments to back to back image titles and also an important manifestation of the"classical elegance"of novel publications.From a functional perspective,the novel printmaking title is a way for bookmakers to imple-ment their personal will,a tool for editors to show off their talents and the"compass"for artists to draw printmaking.As for the readers,they can understand the core plot through the title while gaining a visual aesthetic experience.
