"The Death of Aunt Cui"and the Historical Situation of Xiao Hong's Writing:Re-examination of the Narrative Problems in The Town in March
In 1941,Xiao Hong published her novel The Town in March,in which the death of the pro-tagonist Aunt Cui was often seen as a tragedy for an enlightener who couldn't find a way out. However,it is found that there actually exists the author's intention of affirming enlightenment in Aunt Cui's self-de-struction psychology and confessional behavior through a diachronic investigation of Xiao Hong's writing scope and an analysis of the narrative perspective of the novel. Moreover, the image of a female intellectual trapped in the dilemma is shaped through the retrospective narration of the characters in the novel and the overlapping of the narration self and the experience self. The intertextuality between the inside and outside of this novel reveals the historical circumstances is of significance to Xiao Hong's writing.
