The documents in eastern Fujian refer to systematic folk ones based on families with a long time span and a large number ranging from the mid Ming Dynasty to 1949,with a preserved quantity of o-ver 100 000 pieces.These documents are interrelated and form four major groups:contracts of sale and lease of land,documents related to economic and social security,marriage contracts and inheritance docu-ments,documents of everyday civil life.The four major document groups include documents on the system of private property rights confirmation as well as life-related documents representing people's social status and face,deeply reflecting the spiritual and cultural connotations of contractual integrity,national right-eousness,and family sentiment in eastern Fujian society.
