Past and Present of the Central Java Gamalan Instrument Rebab—Historical Fusion of Diverse Musical Cultures
Currently, there is relatively little attention and research on the rebab, one of the instruments in the Java-nese Gamelan, both domestically and internationally. The rebab has historical ties to the Arab instrument rabab, and its evolution in Indonesia reflects the process of cultural exchange and fusion among Arab,Indian, and Indonesian-Javanese cultures. The rebab embodies characteristics of cultural diversity in aspects such as its instrumental form, tonal system, musical forms, aesthetic concepts, and performance thinking. As the only bowed string instrument in the Central Javanese Gamelan ensemble, the rebab holds a leading function and status.Furthermore, the Javanese so-cial and cultural concepts and philosophical ideas regarding harmony and hierarchy have evidently had a profound im-pact on the rebab's leadership practice, giving it a certain social and cultural symbolic significance.
