As a kind of literary style,Wang Yan(mainly referring to the King's words)carries the unique concepts and spirit of the medieval northern literature of China.Wang Yan,as the manifestation of the power of the state and the emperor,became the sharp weapon for the northern regime to fight for legitimacy.And because of its importance in the national politics,it became the literary style with the highest social status and the most representative value in the north.As a literary tradition and a systemized writing style,Wang Yan was established in the early period of the Northern Wei Dynasty,continuing through the Northern Dynasty on to the Sui Dynasty,and finally forming long-lasting literary traditions.And there were some literary traditions formed form Wang Yan.The first is that the northern emperors formed the tradition of writing imperial edicts in person.The second is that it influenced the northern literati's status and official careers.And third,the magnificent northern Wang Yan had a profound influence on the southern Wang Yan,promoting the improvement of the rhetorical skills of the southern Wang Yan which made the southern Wang Yan break through its original role a political tool and hold its own unique aesthetic value.
