Impact of Population Migration on Industrial Transformation and Upgrading in the Northeast Border Areas
Using panel data from 35 county-level areas in the border regions of northeast China from 2000 to 2019,this article analyzes the impact and mechanism of population migration on industrial transformation and upgra-ding.The study finds that population migration has a negative impact on the industrial transformation and upgrading of the Northeast border regions, especially on the high-level industrialization.Population migration indirectly affects industrial transformation and upgrading through consumer demand, government expenditure, and investment demand, with decreasing levels of impact accordingly.Population migration also shows regional differences, with a more signif-icant impact on ethnic minority and non-coastal areas.Suggestions are put forward to control population outflow and promote industrial optimization and upgrading in the Northeast border regions.
