Identification with Traditional Chinese Culture in the Poems of the Poets from the Rongmei Tujia Chiefs'Families
During the hundred years from the mid-16th century to the early 18th century,there were nine poets from the Rongmei Tujia Chiefs'families who left nearly a thousand poems.The poets not only had a deep love for Chinese classical poetry,but also embraced Confucian ideas,expressing a wide range of identifications with the spirit of Qu Yuan,the idea of saving the world and helping the people,the culture of the imperial examination system,the concept of a unified world under heaven,and symbolic signs of Chinese culture.The reason why the poets of the Rongmei Tujia Chiefs'families,who lived in a barbarian land,identified with traditional Chinese culture was mainly due to the immigration of Han people and the intermingling of ethnic groups,which promoted the spread of traditional culture in the local area.The implementation of Confucian education in the chiefdom by the dynasty laid a good foun-dation of"studies of Chinese ancient civilization(guo xue)"for the poets of the chiefs'families.The poets broke through geographical,ethnic,and cultural barriers,widely communicated with scholars from the Central Plains,im-proving the level of their poems and enhancing their sense of identification.Through exchanges and interactions,as well as traveling to famous mountains and rivers,the poets broadened their horizons and deepened their understanding of traditional Chinese culture.The poems of poets from the Rongmei Tujia Chiefs'families identifying with traditional Chinese culture are a unique flower in the history of Chinese ethnic literature and a gem in the treasure house of Chi-nese culture.Studying the identification with traditional Chinese culture in the poems of the poets has important im-plications for fostering cultural confidence and consolidating a strong sense of community for the Chinese nation.
