William Hung and the Canonization of the English Translation of Du Fu's Poetry
William Hung,a historian with both Eastern and Western cultural backgrounds, translated Du Fu's poetry into English based on traditional Chinese poetics, establishing Du Fu as"China's greatest poet"and playing a pivotal role in the canonization of Du Fu's works in English. This study reveals that Hung incorporated new his-torical insights and practical translation strategies, evolving the traditional Chinese interpretation paradigm"Zhi Ren Lun Shi"(know others and discuss the circumstances they are in)into an evidence-based translation approach.Guided by this perspective,Hung applied the method of"Shi Shi Hu Zheng"(the mutual provement of poetry and history)to compile and translate Du Fu's poetry, faithfully presenting the"things themselves"within the poems to an English-speaking audience. From a Chinese poetic standpoint,Hung successfully constructed an image of Du Fu as a"complete person"through his translation strategy, establishing an interpretive tradition and advancing the can-onization process of Du Fu's poetry. His efforts provided a valuable model for enhancing the global dissemination and influence of Chinese culture.
