Traditional Chinese medicine,tripterygium wilfordii,possesses potent pharmacological effect and is widely used in the treatment of diabetic nephropathy,nephrotic syndrome,glomerulonephritis,and various renal diseases.However,despite its therapeutic benefits,tripterygium wilfordii is associated with renal toxicity,and in severe cases,it can lead to renal failure and even death.The dual toxic and therapeutic mechanisms of tripterygium wilfordii in the kidneys remain to be elucidated.Therefore,this article comprehensively reviewed the action and mechanisms of tripterygium wilfordii in the kidneys from both toxic and therapeutic perspectives,aiming to reduce the toxicity and enhance the efficacy.
