Research progress on the mechanism of liver injury by polygonum multiflorum and attenuation and synergism
Polygonum multiflorum, commonly used as a nourishing traditional Chinese medicine in clinical practice, has been widely used as a health-promoting herb in medicinal diets and culinary preparations. However,in recent years, there have been occasional reports of liver injury associated with polygonum multiflorum and its products, causing much attention. This paper summarized relevant domestic and international clinical reports on polygonum multiflorum-induced liver damage.Based on the constituents of stilbene glycosides, anthraquinones and gallic acid of polygonum multiflorum and their mechanism of action,as well as potential mechanisms of liver toxicity such as altered metabolism enzymes, oxidative stress, inflammatory responses, mitochondrial damage, and abnormal hepatocyte apoptosis, were analyzed to explore the effect and mechanism of detoxification methods, including processing and compatibility,on reducing the hepatotoxicity of polygonum multiflorum.
