Research progress in traditional Chinese medicine for vascular dementia based on cAMP-PKA-CREB signaling pathway
Cyclic adenosine monophosphate(cAMP)-protein kinase A(PKA)-cAMP responsive element binding protein(CREB)is an important signaling pathway in the nervous system,playing a crucial role in the prevention and treatment of vascular dementia(VaD).Traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)is an important approach in China for treating VaD.Its main advantage lies in its obvious protecting the cerebral blood vessels and improving the learning,memory,and cognitive function,without notable side effect.Based on the regulatory mechanism of the cAMP-PKA-CREB signaling pathway in cerebrovascular lesions and memory/cognitive function,this article comprehensively reviewed the mechanism of action of TCM in preventing and treating VaD with single traditional Chinese medicine or compound,to provide a theoretical basis for the future basic and clinical research on VaD.
