Research progress in synaptic damage in Parkinson's disease and intervention by traditional Chinese medicine
Parkinson's disease(PD)is a common neurodegenerative disorder characterized by both motor and non-motor symptoms. The motor symptoms, closely associated with the loss of dopamine neurons in the substantia nigra pars compacta, are considered a core feature of PD.However,non-motor symptoms such as olfactory dysfunction, visual impairment, sleep disturbances, depression, and cognitive impairment often precede the onset of PD motor symptoms, significantly impacting patients'lives. The emergence of these symptoms is linked to synaptic damage and synaptic functional changes in specific brain regions.Early diagnosis and intervention on synaptic damage are crucial for preventing the progressive worsening of PD.Traditional Chinese medicine has rich theoretical knowledge and clinical experience in treating neurodegenerative diseases, utilizing Chinese herbs as a common approach, with a unique role in synaptic protection. This article reviewed the role of synaptic damage in the development of PD-related symptoms, the underlying mechanism, and the intervention and potential mechanism of Chinese herbs in synaptic damage,to provide new insights for the effective prevention and treatment of neurodegenerative diseases.
