Effect of different filter membranes on bacteriostat content in eye drops
Objective To determine the effect of different filter membranes on the content of benzalkonium chloride in eye drops. Methods The eye drops were filtered through membranes made of polyether sulfone(PES)and polyvinylidene fluoride(PVDF).The filtrate was collected to determine the content of benzalkonium chloride by an established HPLC method and to check the antimicrobial effectiveness. The eye drops were filtered through membrane made of PES and PVDF.The filtrate was collected to determine the content of benzalkonium chloride by an established HPLC method and to check the antimicrobial effectiveness. Results There was no obvious change in benzalkonium chloride content before and after PVDF and PES membrane filtration, and the antimicrobial effectiveness of filtered eye drops met the"A"standard of Chinese Pharmacopoeia. Conclusion PVDF and PES filtration membranes have no effect on the content of benzalkonium chloride in eye drops, namely no adsorption effect on benzalkonium chloride. This study helps select filtration membranes in the production of eye drops.
