Role of mitochondria in the function of adipocytes
Mitochondria, the dynamic powerhouses of the cell, play a critical role in energy production and maintaining cellular equilibrium in eukaryotic organisms.Adipocytes, commonly known as fat cells, are considered fully differentiated cells.Mature adipocyte dysfunction is a hallmark of obesity.Within these cells, mitochondria are pivotal in regulating such functions as fat cell differentiation, lipid management, thermogenic processes, glucose utilization, and insulin responsiveness.Additionally, mitochondrial impairments in the adipocytes are closely linked to metabolic disorders, notably obesity, underlining mitochondria's role as a promising target for obesity management. This review explored the critical role of mitochondria in adipocyte operations and highlighted emerging mitochondrial-targeted therapies for obesity, offering novel perspectives and strategies for the clinical management of obesity.
