Objective To determine the current status of age-friendly drug package inserts(DPI)in China, understand the demand for and influence factors of DPI among elderly patients, and propose strategies for improving the age suitability reform of DPI.Methods This was a national multi-center cross-sectional study targeting chronic disease patients aged≥60 years. The survey included patient basic information, cognitive understanding of DPI,barriers to reading DPI,DPI usage needs, and suggestions for DPI improvement.Pharmacists conducted the survey through home pharmaceutical services and had the questionnaires filled out. Results Totally 8325 patients were surveyed, with an average age of(70.10±7.84)years,3866 males(46.44%)and 4459 females(53.56%).The main obstacles for elderly people in reading DPI included"too small text to read"(78.23%),"too many terminologies"(58.79%),"too much content, unsure where to focus"(56.48%),and"lack of information related to elderly medication"(55.93%).The main suggestions for improving DPI for the elderly included bigger font size(31.33%),simple and understandable language use(27.14%),content simplification(25.31%),and visual aids(15.06%).Logistic regression indicated that education level, keeping of DPI,DPI readability, urbanization level, and regional difference were the main influence factors for patients'DPI usage needs(P<0.05).Conclusion Current DPIs in China fail to meet the usage demands of the elderly.Age-freindly DPIs for patients should be designed to ensure the readability, understandability, simplicity, and perception of information.
