The Symmetry Contradiction in Semantics of Metaphorical Cognition
It is commonly believed that metaphorical semantics expressions exhibits irreversibility in cognition,wherein namely the status of the tenor and vehicle in a statement is asymmetrical,and that.E exchanging the tenor and vehicle would greatly alter the semantics,even render the statement incomprehensible.However,similarity and analogy,which form the foundation of metaphor comprehension,are inherently symmetric relations.This articlepaper discusses discussed the contradictory propertiesion of metaphor in terms of symmetry with based on situational semantics.Based on whether a same situation type can be abstracted as the cognitive framework,metaphorical expressions can be divided into three types:strong symmetry,weak symmetry,and asymmetry.And it was also elucidates elucidated how symmetry and asymmetry are manifested in semantic interpretation incorporating semantic calculus,in order to eliminate the contradictions in the symmetry problem.Finally,through the discussion on metaphorical symmetry,it was argues argued that metaphor comprehension is not simply an analogy or categorization because.Bboth the symmetric analogy process and the asymmetric categorization process are retained in metaphor comprehensions as integral parts of semantic generation in this process.
