Scientific Conservation Practice of Modern and Contemporary Architectural Heritage——The Example of the Conservation and Restoration Design Projects for the Old Library of Shanghai Jiao Tong University
With the advancement of technology in the modern society and the rising awareness in heritage protection, the scientific approaches to conserving architectural heritage evolved significantly, and the philosophy of scientific protection has emerged. This article uses the conservation and restoration design project of the old library of Shanghai Jiao Tong University as an example.Based on the historical development and conceptual framework of"scientific preservation"in the protection context of architectural heritage,it elaborates on the application of"integrated material research methodology"encompassing literature review,on-site investigation, and laboratory analyses, alongside information gathering and non-destructive testing techniques during the building's condition assessment phase. The proposed conservation and restoration plan that uses scientific conservation strategies including new materials and equipment further verified the feasibility and necessity of applying methods of scientific conservation for architectural heritage, and enriches the successful experiences of the applications of scientific conservation principles in architectural heritage conservation practice.
