On the Concept of Honesty in Shang and Zhou Dynasties
Honesty,as one of the traditional Chinese virtues, plays an important role in personal cultiva-tion,social education and other aspects, and has been respected by all ages.Throughout the previous dis-cussions,most of them focused on the Confucian"honesty"thought in the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period, ignoring the"honesty"concept that existed before. In fact, the prosperity of the"honesty"thought in the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period benefited from the warmth of the"honesty"concept in the Shang and Zhou Dynasties. In the Shang Dynasty, people worshipped sacrifice and divination, revered ghosts and gods, and the concept of honesty was still in its infancy.During the Western Zhou Dynasty, the society respected morality, and emphasized that virtue should be used to match heaven, respect morality and protect the people. With the establishment of the ritual and music sys-tem,the concept of honesty has been gradually developed and extended to social activities, from God cen-tered to people-oriented.From a historical point of view, exploring the concept of"honesty"is helpful to trace back and sort out the ethical and moral thoughts of the Pre-Qin Dynasty. It is of great significance for building a harmonious socialist society with Chinese characteristics and realizing the unity of rule of law and rule of virtue.
