Torii Ryuzo and Sculptured Stone Tombs of the Liao Dynasty
Torii Ryuzo is a famous modern Japanese anthropologist,ethnographer and historian.In the lat-er period of his academic career,he devoted himself to the anthropological and archaeological research in Liao Dynasty,and the stone tomb was the focus of his research.In 1942,Torii Ryuzo published the book,Sculptured Stone Tombs of the Liao Dynasty in Yenching University,which collected the results of Torii Ryuzo's survey of Liao Dynasty stone tomb in Anshan area,and believed that these stone statues reflected the Khitan customs,Buddhist allusions,the story of 24 filial piety,the story of Journey to the West and many other scenes.Its research is of pioneering significance,but its judgment has some inaccuracies.On the basis of annotating the Sculptured Stone Tombs of the Liao Dynasty,this paper describes the investi-gation process of Torii Ryuzo on the remains of Liao Dynasty and the content of the book,and gives a brief comment on the background of the publication of the book.
