During the middle to late fourth century,Murong,Yuwen and Duan,three of the more powerful Xianbei tribles in the"Upheaval of the Five Barbarians",launched a fierce war for hegemony in the west of northeast China.After the defeat of the Yuwen trible in the war,partial remnant gradually merged and formed new tribes in the flat pine forest grassland,and retained the original clan organization,the most famous of which were Kumoesh and Khitan.Later,the battle of the flat pine forest,launched by the Northern Wei army,disclosed the first page of Khitan history.
