A Comparative Study of Two Chinese Versions of Long Day's Journey into Night Based on the Horizon of Bassnett's Theory
Eugene O'Neill,as the winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1936,is the father of modern western drama.There is almost one hundred years'translation and research history of O'Neill's master-pieces in China,but the related systematic studies on the translation practice are very limited.According to my study,O'Neill's theory on drama is in line with Bassnett's translation theory.And"Long Day's Journey Into Night"dramatically portrays the personalities and relationships of James Tyrone,Mary Tyrone,and their two sons,making it the most representative play of O'Neill's biographical works.Therefore,this paper develops a comparative study of the two Chinese versions of this play,which combines O'Neill's theatrical linguistic characteristics of colloquialism,popularization,and musicalization to reveal Ou Yangji and Qiao Zhigao's translation features.The purpose is to arouse attention to the field and promote the high-quality development of drama translation.
