The Interaction of Time and Space:The Unity of Time and Space in the Perspective of Architectural Phenomenology
Architectural phenomenology is an internal movementin architecture that started in the 1950s,reached its peakin the late 1970s and 1980s,and remains an academic topic and architectural style until today. When phenomenology was introduced into architecture, architectural space gradually shifted from a single physical space to a multifaceted and complex perceptual space.Examining architecturalspace through phenomenology, the pattern of time and the expression of space have unity. As a multi-level and diversified concept, architectural space is an organic whole jointly composed of natural and man-made environments, and it is the carrier of human activities, carrying the changes of time. From ancient times to the present, the unity of space and time is a necessary condition to maintain the movement, and time and space are the basic dimensions for everything to perceive the world. The organic group formed by the spreading out of the planes of architecture has actually transformed spatial consciousness into temporal process. However,in the architecture of time, architectural space is usually regarded as a static object,a notion that may limit the potential and expressive power of architecture. This paper combs through the development of phenomenology, applies the relevant theories of architectural phenomenology to analyze the relationship between architectural space and time, and explores different ways of expressing time in architectural space in order to expand the boundaries of architectural design.
