Aging-adaptation Design Strategies for Old Residential Communities from the Perspective of Gender Difference Theory
With the swift aging of China's population, the living needs and quality of life for elderly individuals are on the rise. However, old communities,as the primary living spaces for the elderly, often encounter issues such as outdated facilities, inadequate environments, and a lack of services. These challenges impede the physical and mental well-being as well as social participation of the elderly. To enhance aging in old communities,it is essential to fully consider the distinct needs and preferences of elderly men and women from a gender perspective and create more humanized and compassionate age-appropriate designs. The theory of gender differences posits that gender is a social construct;different gender roles and identities influence individuals'spatial perception and behavior. Therefore, gender should be an important dimension in spatial design.Using the"gender-space"design method, this paper put forward a series of age-appropriate renovation design strategies from three aspects:outdoor space environment, public facilities and age-appropriate housing, aiming at providing theoretical guidance and practical reference for age-appropriate renovation of old residential areas.
