From President Xi Jinping's call for the"creative transformation and innovative development of fine traditional Chinese culture"during his visit to Qufu in November 2013 to his speech at the Cultural Inheritance and Development Symposium in June 2023,he emphasized that"'The second combination'represents another ideological liberation,enabling us to fully leverage the precious resources of fine traditional Chinese culture within a broader cultural space and explore future-oriented theoretical and institutional innovations"."The second combination"of Marxism and fine traditional Chinese culture in Xi Jinping's Thought on Culture opens up vast spaces for significant cultural innovation in shaping modern Chinese civilization in contemporary times.The comprehension of the history of Chinese civilization and its evolution journey was once obscured due to various reasons such as historical upheavals,insufficient literature,and the prevalence of ancient skepticism.Today,breaking away from an extreme understanding of our national history,along with the research by Chinese and foreign scholars and the latest archaeological findings,allow us to stand at a higher vantage point for a renewed understanding of China's long-standing and distinctive civilization.The evolution and development of traditional Chinese civilization predated the"Axis Era",with continuous progress in cultural exchange during the Xia,Shang,and Zhou dynasties,culminating in Confucius establishing Confucianism as a new synthesis and peak.Confucius'ideology exhibits a distinct inheritance,and a correct understanding of his ideology requires rectifying the biases towards the overall underestimation of the early development of Chinese culture.Confucianism inherits the achievements of Chinese civilization from thousands of years ago,and the pursuit of its social ideals is also the result and concentrated expression of the internal evolution of Chinese culture over millennia.Standing at a new historical starting point,the construction of modern Chinese civilization should carry forward traditional civilization,grasp its inherent spiritual essence,and adhere to principles of inheritance and innovation.Only by unlocking the innovation space within Chinese culture can we effectively enhance today's governance system,establish a shared value orientation,and continuously foster the responsibility to"remain true to our original aspiration and keep our mission firmly in mind".These ideas imbued with"honor and responsibility"should become the nation's study and the country's education.China should also contribute this academic ideology to the world,nurturing and building a new global spirit.
