Parental Affection(Qinqin)as the Foremost Element:The Confucianism Shift of Phenomenology and the Phenomenology of Confucianism
The phenomenological movement has undergone several shifts throughout its development trajectory,each motivated by the fundamental phenomenological principle"returning to the things themselves!"These shifts are a result of divergent interpretations of"the thing itself"among phenomenologists.For instance,when Husserl takes consciousness as"the thing itself",his phenomenology unfolds as the phenomenology of consciousness;when Heidegger designates Being as"the thing itself",the phenomenology transitions from Husserl's consciousness-oriented phenomenology to Heidegger's phenomenology of Being or phenomenology as ontology;when Levinas considers the ethical relation between the I and the Other as"the thing itself",phenomenology shifts from the phenomenology of Being to ethical phenomenology.Beneath the successive turns in phenomenology lies an implicit thread of temporality or original time as"the thing itself".In Husserl,consciousness is ultimately constructed as time-consciousness,signifying the ultimate origin of everything——"the thing itself".In Heidegger,although Being is regarded as"the thing itself",the meaning of Being resides in temporality.Thus,temporality or original existential time becomes the authentic"the thing itself".Similarly,in Levinas,the ethical association of the I with the Other constitutes the original time,and this ethical time represents Levinas'unique"the thing itself".By and large,it is"the thing itself"that transforms from time-consciousness to existential time and subsequently to ethical time,propelling phenomenology from the phenomenology of consciousness to the phenomenology of Being and eventually to ethical phenomenology.Upon encountering Chinese philosophy,particularly Confucianism,phenomenology has taken a Confucian turn initially spearheaded by Zhang Xianglong.He argues that"the thing itself",to which phenomenology should return,is the ultimate source of meaning The source of meaning is temporality or original time,which,for Zhang Xianglong,differs from Husserl's time-consciousness,Heidegger's existential time,or Levinas'ethical time.Instead,it manifests as the time of"parental affection"(亲亲qinqin)in parent-child relationship.This"parental affection"as time is embodied on both the levels of filial piety and kindness,as well as the more original interdependence and Being-with between parent and child.The essence of the Confucian turn in phenomenology lies in adopting"parental affection"as the original form of time,i.e.,"the thing itself".The significance of the Confucian turn within phenomenology can only be fully understood within the genealogy of phenomenology that takes temporality as"the thing itself".This perspective applies equally to Confucian phenomenology-the outcome of Confucian turn in phenomenology.
