Abstract
During more than 40 years of academic research,Professor Fan Heping樊和平has been committed to the construction of a Chinese discourse system concerning a theoretical system of ethics.In a word,his academic pursuit centers on the Ethical Spirit in Chinese civilization.As a matter of fact,Ethical Spirit is the symbolic term and the theoretical focus of Professor Fan Heping's academic exploration.He first employed this concept in his master's thesis and has diligently developed it ever since.The academic foundation of Ethical Spirit derives from the conceptual distinction and theoretical analysis of Ethics and Morality,and it is rooted in the Chinese philosophical form that unifies ethics and morality.Professor Fan has constructed an ethical and moral system of dialectical interaction between ethics and morality under the grand vision of spiritual philosophy,in which he strives to realize the unity of ethical spirit,national spirit,and the spirit of the times.The academic advancement of his conception of Ethical Spirit begins with the Chinese Ethical Spirit Trilogy,its philosophical construction is taken in the Moral Metaphysics Trilogy,its argument in practice is taken in the Moral National Conditions Trilogy,its systematic dialogue is carried out in the Moral Philosophy Lecture Trilogy,and a further development is proceeded in his ongoing Theoretical Form of Ethical Spirit and the Chinese Discourse System and Theoretical System Trilogy.The historical,speculative,and empirical research,together with cultural dialogue and theoretical construction,these five subjects within the five Trilogies demonstrate a calm and roaming academic track and mental course for exploring Ethical Spirit.Fan's study of Ethical Spirit is grounded in the profound,abundant,and precious resources of Chinese ethical culture.It focuses on the modem development of Chinese civilization while also absorbing the essence of world civilization.The three points of his project,namely the theory and system of spiritual philosophy,the concept and method of Value Ecology centered on ecological values and the ecological world,and the Chinese tradition of unifying ethics and morality,serve to uncover the philosopher's stones for moving toward Ethical Spirit.For over twenty years,Professor Fan led the team undertake four rounds of national surveys and eight rounds of Jiangsu Province surveys,and they developed the"Database for Chinese Ethical and Moral Development",which consists of more than 20 million words.All of this clearly demonstrated that the development of modern Chinese ethics has encountered three major problems in China:morality surpasses ethics,reason surpasses spirit,and moral reason surpasses ethical spirit.Correspondingly,there are three major diseases:the absence of ethics,the absence of spirit,and the overflow of moral reason.So,three major returns must be carried out:an ethical return,a spiritual return,and a return of Ethical Spirit.At the same time,the construction of the theoretical system of modern Chinese ethics must solve three major problems:being China,having ethics,and forming a system.How to solve these cutting-edge issues?In a word,to construct the Chinese Ethical Spirit in the modern world.The main idea of this construction is to implement a strategy for modern ethical culture and carry out an ethical revolution within the view of civilization.That is,the ethical view of civilization should be regarded as an important discoursing mode and a value measure in the world,and it should be in the perspective of ethics to understand the development,and to construct and judge the civilization.Through the creative transformation and innovative development of the Chinese ethical view of civilization,we will construct the modern Chinese Ethical Spirit,together with a modern Chinese discourse system with a theoretical and strategic system of ethical and moral development,and then complete the dual mission of cultural inheritance and serving the national strategy,and at last contribute new Chinese wisdom to the construction of a new form of human civilization.
