Carrying Forward the Humanistic Spirit and Building Human Philosophy:An Interview with Professor Lou Yulie
This article presents an interview with Professor Lou Yulie,conducted by Associate Professor Sun Guozhu from the Philosophy Department of China University of Political Science and Law.In this discussion,Lou systematically addresses the fundamental spirit,composition,research methods,thinking characteristics,and modern transformation of Chinese culture.Lou emphasizes the importance of recognizing cultural differences,reassessing Chinese culture within a broad comparative civilization framework.He posits that the humanistic spirit is the essence of Chinese culture,permeating various aspects of it.He introduces key concepts such as"taking heaven as a guide,using history as a mirror"and"dismissing worship of deities while guarding against fetishism".Consequently,he advocates for the promotion of humanistic values and the construction of a human-centered philosophy.Regarding the composition of Chinese culture,Lou highlights its holistic nature,focusing on the relationships among Confucianism,Buddhism,and Daoism as central to academic inquiry.He argues that the research methodology of Chinese culture should emphasize the idea of"general learning".Additionally,the unity of knowledge and action,as well as the integration of body and mind,are pivotal elements of traditional Chinese scholarship.He stresses the importance of being well-educated,inquisitive,reflective,discerning,and committed to practice.In discussing the thinking characteristics of Chinese culture,Lou identifies a wisdom rooted in the"middle way",summarizing it through the principles of overall interconnectedness,dynamic balance,and natural rationality.He also contrasts these with Western philosophical traditions and references the Wei and Jin metaphysical concept of"forgetting words to grasp meaning",underscoring that language cannot fully encapsulate meaning—an essential tenet of traditional Chinese wisdom.Finally,in the context of the modern transformation of Chinese culture,Lou advocates for a focus on cultural subjectivity.He calls for a careful balance between scientific and technological culture and humanistic culture,emphasizing the need to consciously inherit excellent traditional values while actively incorporating outstanding global cultures,ultimately contributing to the emergence of a new world civilization.
