Contrary to the general impression by Chinese scholars on the Chinese translations of works by and on Henri Lefebvre from 1949 to 1966,he actually received considerable attention in China during this period.However,relevant works were often highly selective,focusing on his aesthetics,philosophy(especially on alienation)and theory of the state,while neglecting his"critique of everyday life".The translation during this period also had the following shortcomings:reliance on Soviet materials and viewpoints,shortage of French books,journals and translators,limited readership due to"internal circulation",and the difficulty in publishing"reactionary"political texts.Another major problem was the lack of original critique of Lefebvre's works by Chinese scholars.The reasons include:some scholars were unable to read Lefebvre's works in the original language;others had difficulty accessing academic information about him;still others found it hard to,or did not dare to,or were unwilling to participate in the"anti-revisionist"debates;the Sino-Soviet ideological disputes caused Lefebvre being sidelined among Chinese academia.
