The current research on James Harrington pays more attention to his principles of government than model of republic.Harrington's model of republic was formed in the political context of England in the 1650s,and it was a response to the question of"what is a republic".By responding to this question,Harrington made an important contribution to the development of modern western republicanism. He proved the existence of a republic ruled by law.He gave"equality"and"democracy"a positive meaning, making them positively related to the republic and political stability. He combined the republic to the representative system, conceived a representative republic for the large countries, and freed the republic from the constraints of direct democracy and small countries with a few people. He made the establishment of the republic in modern society theoretically and practically feasible for the first time, and influenced the political thoughts and practices of the United States.
