As an important concept of Rousseau's democratic thought,general will fulfilled Liang Qichao's practical need to promote the transformation of Chinese politics from despotism to democracy,and was once promoted by him as a basic category of modern political analysis.However,due to the inevitable problem of translation distortion in the cross-civilizational transmission of ideas,when adopting the concept of general will,Liang Qichao misunderstood and transformed this notion,prompting him to turn to a realpolitik-based critic of general will to reveal the theoretical dilemma of this category.It can be seen that,as a common phenomenon in human political development,the effect of mutual appreciation of political civilizations is influenced by the textual translation and practical concerns of thinkers.
