Analysis of National Natural Science Foundation of China in the field of integration of traditional and western medicine between 2001 and 2020
Objective To analyze the funded projects by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) in the field of integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine from 2001 to 2020. Methods Information on NSFC-funded projects was collected from the NSFC database,LetPub,MedSci,and the Z Library. A quantitative analysis was conducted on several aspects, including the number of projects, funding amounts, project categories, application codes, supporting institutions, keywords, disease types, and intervention measures. Results Between 2001 and 2020,NSFC funded 3,459 projects in the field of integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine, with a total funding of 1,381.202 million RMB. General and youth projects were the main types of support. The leading funding institutions were universities such as Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine,Beijing University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and Tianjin University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The most funded discipline was the clinical basic discipline of integrated Chinese and Western medicine (H3302). Research projects focused primarily on mechanisms of action, particularly autophagy, signal transduction, and metabolomics. The most studied diseases were atherosclerosis, cancer, and diabetic nephropathy. Chinese herbal compounds were the primary intervention measures. Conclusion The Chinese government places significant emphasis on the development of integrated Chinese and Western medicine, with funding trends favoring research institutions that demonstrate strong scientific research capabilities. Funded projects predominantly focus on common clinical diseases. However, there are notable differences among the types of funded projects. It is recommended to continue reinforcing strong research directions, address weaker areas, explore new research avenues, and promote the balanced development of integrated Chinese and Western medicine disciplines.
