Exploration and practice of offering American Heart Association BLS courses based on PWW learning method in higher colleges of traditional Chinese medicine:a case study of Shanghai university of traditional Chinese medicine
Objective To explore the application effectiveness of the American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) course training based on the Practice While Watching (PWW) learning method, providing a reference for the future multi-site and large-scale implementation of AHA's BLS courses. Methods A total of 495 students who participated in the BLS course training at the Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine-AHA Cardiovascular Emergency Center between 2017 and 2021 were selected. The PWW teaching method was applied in the training. The exam scores and survey questionnaires were collected and analyzed. The survey questionnaires included questions related to the instructor, course content, skill mastery, strengths and weaknesses of the course, and suggestions for future improvements. Each question was analyzed statistically. Results The pass rate for the BLS course practical exam was 100%,and the pass rate for the theory exam was 98.38%. The analysis of the survey questionnaires provided insights into the overall situation of the training and the strengths and weaknesses of the BLS course from the perspective of training institutions and instructors. Conclusion The BLS cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training based on the Practice While Watching (PWW) teaching method can effectively stimulate the students' enthusiasm and self-confidence for learning, significantly improve their emergency medical skills, and enhance their willingness to provide aid. Moreover, this study serves as a valuable reference for the future implementation of AHA's BLS courses across multiple institutions and on a larger scale, which will contribute to the development of more standardized, efficient, and high-quality training programs.
