Research on application and carbon emission reduction effect of rare earth elements in wind power in China
Low-carbon transformation of energy and electricity is crucial for achieving the"dual carbon"goal and maintaining en-ergy security.Key minerals are essential for the transformation of a clean energy economy.Based on the scenario analysis method and dynamic material flow analysis method, this paper examined the supply and demand of rare earths in various technical application sce-narios in China from 2023 to 2060,taking into account the disparity in abundance of rare earth elements. The findings indicated a severe shortage in the supply and demand of certain heavy rare earth elements.Furthermore,as industrial demand continued to grow, the poten-tial of rare earth recycling to address the supply-demand imbalance was limited. Therefore,China's wind power has appropriately re-tained traditional turbine technology in its technological development path.It has also strengthened innovation in material technology substitution, improved the recycling system of key resources, and reduced the reliance on key materials such as rare earths in the devel-opment of clean energy. This paper also found that the CO2 emitted during rare earth processing and production processes was not signif-icant compared to the emission reduction achieved by wind power. The advantages of carbon emission reduction were evident. However,it is important to note that global trade climate regulations are becoming increasingly stringent, making carbon footprint management in rare earth production processes of practical significance.
