Tourism Climate Comfort and Risk for the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau
Traditional assessments of climate comfort focus on the temperature humidity index (THI),wind-chill index (WCI) and index of clothing (ICL).If risk of the plateau climate is ignored,it is difficult to comprehensively evaluate the plateau tourism climate. We introduce the plateau response index (PRI),Quv,using a sample of 99 cities across the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and long-term observation from 1980-2010,We analyzed changes in each factor across seasons and space and found that the main factor for climate comfort and risk on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau is altitude. As altitude increases the THI and WCI decrease and the PRI and Quv increase. The THI,WCI and PRI are best in summer, spring and autumn alternate, and winter is the worst; Quv is the best in winter, followed by spring and autumn, and summer is the worst.Comfort and risk follow a regular horseshoe shape distribution and show step grading.A two-dimensional matrix portfolio of comfort and risk allows us to divide this into six types. For example,we found that high altitude equals uncomforTablele and high risk, and low altitude is the opposite. The best tourist area on the plateau is located at Qinghai Lake,Yarlung Zangbo River basin and along the edge of the plateau. This research offers an appropriate guide to tourists visiting the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.
