A review on the TCM treatment of depression based on the theory of"Microbiome-gut-brain axis"
Intestinal microbiota is involved in the possible mechanism of depression, which plays an important role as an objective material basis affecting the information exchange between the gut and the brain. The occurrence of depression not only brings trouble to patients, but also poses heavy burden to the family and society, which makes clinicians continue to seek ways to treat depression. While Western medi-cine is optimizing the effect of antidepressant drugs, the advantages of traditional Chinese medicine in the treatment of depression have also been highlighted, which is with significant efficacy and few adverse reactions, and it has become a treatment that people are more willing to choose and accept. The theory of"five viscera causing depression"has always been the guideline and direction for the treatment of depression in traditional Chinese medicine. The excessive or the deficiency of the heart, liver, spleen, lung and kidney will cause emotional discomfort and induce depres-sion.In recent years, with the continuous development and improvement of the theory of Microbiome-gut-brain axis, more and more traditional Chinese medicine scholars have found that the treatment of depression from the perspective of regulating gastrointestinal function has a significant and lasting effect. The paper summarizes the research progress of"Microbiome-gut-brain axis"and summarizes the understanding and treatment of depression from the perspective of regulating gastrointestinal function in traditional Chinese medicine in recent years.Traditional Chinese med-icine can affect depression by regulating the secretion of brain gut peptide and regulating intestinal microbiota. From the perspective of traditional Chinese medicine preparations used in clinical antidepressants, regulating intestinal flora has become a new target of traditional Chinese medicine in treating depression.Combined with modern scientific methods and research results, the theory of"Microbiome-gut-brain axis"provides a broader idea for exploring the treatment of depression in traditional Chinese medicine.
