A review on treating acne in TCM based on TCM syndrome differentiation
Acne is a common clinical disease in dermatology, with the characteristics of slow course and easy recurrence, which can affect the mental health and social life of patients in serious cases. In recent years, with the improvement of people's living standards, the prevalence of acne has gradually increased, and the age of onset is not limited to teenagers.More and more people pay attention to the prevention and treatment of acne because of its disfigurement.Western medicine believes that the main causes of acne are increased sebum secretion and abnormal keratosis of follicular sebaceous glands due to the effect of androgens.Oral or topical retinoids and antibiotics are usually used for treatment.Topical drugs include topical benzoyl peroxide and hydroxy acids.Photodynamic therapy, laser therapy, red and blue light irradiation and other physical therapy were used individually. However,Western medicine has many adverse reactions such as contraindications, unclear efficacy, easy to produce drug resistance and easy to relapse, and its clinical application is greatly limited.Traditional Chinese medicine believes that acne is mostly related to six external emotions, seven internal injuries, improper diet, overwork and so on,resulting in phlegm,Qi(气),humidity, heat, stasis in the skin, resulting in acne.TCM treatment often starts from the overall perspective and choose personalized treatment plans.TCM has accumulated rich theoretical and practical experience in the treatment of acne.It has a definite therapeutic effect on controlling the condition, reducing recurrence, relieving systemic accompanying symptoms, and improving quality of life.It has the advantages of minimal ad-verse reactions and targeting both the root causes and the symptoms.Through searching the literature in databases such as CNKI and Wanfang, the author summarizes and sorts out the experience of TCM doctors on acne from etiology and pathogenesis to syndrome differentiation and treatment in recent years, aiming to provide reference for TCM clinical treatment of acne.
