Discussion on the biological connotation of"spleen weakness and intestine deficiency"in UC from mitochondrial dysfunction and ferroptosis of intestinal epithelial cells
Ulcerative colitis(UC),as a common and frequently-occurring disease of the digestive system,is characterized by complex pathogenesis, limited treatment and repeated disease duration, which seriously intrudes on the physical and mental health of patients.Mitochondrial dysfunction and intestinal epithelial cell ferroptosis affect the pathological evolution of UC,and intestinal microbiome changes and intestinal immune response are involved in this process. Therefore, restoring mitochondrial function and inhibiting intestinal epithelial cell ferroptosis are considered as promising strategies for the treatment of UC.Traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)believes that spleen weakness and intestinal deficiency is the root of the UC disease.Liver wood interferes with spleen earth and aggravates the root of spleen weakness and intestinal deficiency, but there is a lack of material basic research related to it,so it is difficult to fully and accurately reveal its scientific connotation.Based on this,in combination with the progress of modern medical research, this paper took mitochondrial dysfunction-ferroptosis of intestinal epithelial cells as the starting point, sorted out and summarized the agreement between the pathogenesis of UC in TCM and the progress of molecular biology, and found that mitochondrial dysfunction is the microscopic manifestation of spleen weakness(complete mitochondrial function is the premise of spleen governance and development). The maladjustment of mitochondrial quality control is the pathological manifestation of spleen weakness and dysfunction),and the ferroptosis of intestinal epithelial cells is the biological basis of intestinal deficiency(the integrity of mucosal barrier is the key to the change of intestinal system, and the damage of mucosal barrier caused by intestinal epithelial cell ferroptosis is the material manifestation of intestinal deficiency). This study is expected to better interpret the scientific connotation of spleen weakness and intestinal deficiency, and provide theoretical guidance and ideas for the clinical prevention and treatment of UC in TCM.
