How to Conduct Research on Chinese Ethnic History:Lessons Learned from Ethnic Histories Conducted by Ma Changshou and Zhou Weizhou
How to do the research on Chinese ethnic history?The previous explorations of senior scholars and researchers have set models for us to learn from.Mr.Ma Changshou's study in Chinese ethnic researches have made outstanding achievements through prominent features such as adopting the vision of sociology and anthropology,theory and method,with solid and in-depth field research to exploring on Chinese ethnic groups.His disciple Zhou Weizhou was good at historical skills and made great achievements in the field of ethnic history in northwest and northern China.Their experiences and unique characteristics in conducting ethnic history studies have provided three important lessons for us to learn:firstly,there should be a vision,theory and method of anthropology and ethnology;secondly,there should be field studies so as to connecting both history and reality,and establish a sense of the ethnic group,which is the basis of understanding the ethnic group;thirdly,we must have a solid historical foundation and a broad historical vision.
