The Establishment of the Western Xia in the Perspective of the Former Territories of the Tang Dynasty
The archival texts of the political interaction between various parties during the founding period of the Western Xia Dynasty indicate that the structural process of the Tangut Li lineage's establishing the Xia state in the old Xinjiang of the Tang Dynasty was simplified by the linear historical narrative described by later generations. From the regional perspective, during the period of integration of the Dingnanjun, there was a notable shift in the locus of power within the Tangut Li lineage, transitioning from the hereditary military governorship of Li Jipeng to the branch led by Li Jiqian. The westward integration process derived from this not only makes use of the regional political tradition since the Tang Dynasty, but also uses the institutional environment of the competition between Liao and Song dynasties, which is the political space of the overlapping structure of various political resources. This endeavor represents a multi-layered orchestration of diverse political resources. However, due to differences in political culture and strategic objectives, commonly recognized regional political symbols were interpreted differently across entities such as the Tangut Li clan, the Song Dynasty, and the Liao Dynasty. This continuous differentiation gradually diminished the flexibility inherent in regional political standards symbolized by official titles, leading to changes in their applications and implications.During the Qingli era,a tripartite consensus emerged, rooted in the political agreement between the Song and Liao dynasties and strengthened by treaties with the Western Xia.This diplomatic initiative established a new paradigm for the regional political order following the establishment of the Western Xia.
