Founding of Research Department of Central Institute for Nationalities and Its Contributions to Ethnic Studies
The Research Department of Central Institute for Nationalities,which brought together excellent Chinese scholars of sociology,anthropology,ethnology and other disciplines,was the most powerful and influential research institution on ethnic issues in the early days of People's Republic of China.During the six years from 1952 to 1958,the Research Department not only defined the four-disciplinary structure of ethnological research in China in the form of document,it also facilitated the establishment of the highest institution for ethnological studies,the Institute of Ethnology of the Chinese Academy of Science,which laid the disciplinary and institutional foundation for ethnological research,development and nationwide ethnic investigation.In addition,researchers from the Research Department also conducted Ethnic Identification,the Nationwide Survey of Minority Nationalities'Social Histories in China and a series of social practice,wrote a large number of works on ethnology,ethnic history,cultivated many ethnic work professionals,so as to contribute to the promotion of ethnic work progress and ethnic higher education development in the country.
