Historical Text Writing and Integration of Border Society:The Story of the Duan Family, the Chief Magistrate of Dali in Yuan Dynasty
The reconstruction of the Duan's family history in the Yuan Dynasty in Dali folk documents is a typical case to explore the formation and development of the Chinese national community. The rule of the Ming Dynasty reorganized the local official politics and Buddhist tradition in Dali, which makes profound impact upon the historical memory of ethnic Bai intellectual elites in Dali. The local history of Dali in the Ming Dynasty, represented by Bai Gu Tong Ji,fictionalized the long-term hostile political relationship between the Dali governor Duan, the vassal king and the provincial officials, and the practice of Duan Bao's delegation to Nanjing to surrender to the Ming Dynasty. It aims to integrate the border social tradition with the"Yunnan-based"characteristic with the political stance of Dali scholars towards conforming to the Ming rule. The interaction and integration of the diversified historical narratives of the Dali Duan's family in various texts not only reflects the borderland population's active acceptance of national governance, but also reveals the historical characteristics of the Chinese political and cultural system as a"great tradition",to accommodate the"little traditions"of borderland society.
