From "Ruling by Custom" to Cultural Reform:Lessons to Learn from Chen Yongling's Research on Jiarong Chieftainship System
Chen Yongling's research on the Jiarong chieftainship system is a representative achievement of the functional school of ethnology in China.This paper analyzes the relationship between Jiarong culture and chieftainship system by Chen Yongling to depict the political practice connotation of the Chinese traditional thought of"ruling by custom"in the frontier ethnic society.Chen Yongling's perception on the reform of frontier politics in Jiarong society during the Republic of China period clarified the effective path to promote the system transformation of the state and the ethnic group simultaneously from the cultural perspective,which brings important implications and lessons to learn for promoting the system modernization and social development in the ethnic areas under the present background of Chinese modernization.
