Create a Narrative Discourse that Make False Accusation and Discord as "Wu" and "Jian":Speech Adjustment in the Communication between the Northern Song Dynasty and the Xixia Dynasty
Narrative discourse of the interaction and communication between Northern Song Dynasty and his vassal state Xixia Dynasty implies important cultural ideas and orders.Although both sides obeyed the hierarchical system and behaved according to the role ethics of the emperor and his ministers, but this can hardly avoid the complex struggle among them despite the superficial benevolence of the emperor and the loyalty of the ministers. Therefore, there arose a set of"wu"and"jian"narrative discourse that can not only maintain the relationship between the emperor and the minister, but also adjust the conflict between the ideal and the reality. The core of the"wu"and"jian"narrative discourse is to push the responsibility to the"third party"outside the emperor and ministers. The Northern Song court often used"wu"and"jian"narrative discourse to"contain"the Xixia, while the Xixia regime often used it to evade responsibility and maintain the authority of the emperor of the Song Dynasty. Both sides of Song and Xixia maintained the ethical relationship between"fighting without breaking-up"through"wu"and"jian"narrative discourse.Careful review of the narrative discourse of"wu"and"jian"between the Song emperor and the Xixia ministers is of great significance for the correct understanding of the influence of the tradition of emperors and official ethics on the relationship between Song and Xixia, the control of traditional Chinese culture on the nature of the war and the reconciliation mode of Song and Xixia, and the constraints of the state policy of Yanwu Xiuwen in the Northern Song Dynasty on the border ministers and military generals at the borderland area in between Song and Xixia.
