Region and Regionalization as Methods:The Meta-Concept of Chinese Ethnology
"Region"and"regionalization"are the two meta-concepts employed by Chinese ethnology to study the concept of the community for the Chinese nation. The region itself carries the significance of classification scales, while the process of regionalization can better demonstrate the formative characteristics of Chinese civilization from a long-term historical perspective. The exchange, communication and integration within and between regions constitute a process in which diverse regions continuously integrate into China.Various regions continuously achieve cross-regional connection, combination and integration, and continuously absorb the civilization characteristics of the Chinese nation, thereby enabling local regions to continuously acquire the Chinese national character. This is the process of"regionalization"within the community for the Chinese nation.Consequently,"region"and"regionalization"should serve as the methodological criteria for Chinese ethnology in studying the contemporary the community for the Chinese nation. The regional typology theories of classic ethnological and anthropological writers such as Ji Chaoding,Lin Yaohua,Fei Xiaotong, and G.William Skinner have all inspired this view point.Starting from the overall integral framework of the Chinese nation, these classical regional theories describe China's regional types and the processes of regionalization through theoretical deduction or empirical induction, converging into a comprehensive perspective for studying the community for the Chinese nation and collectively demonstrating the regional research concerns of Chinese ethnology.
