Mobility,Embedding, and Integration:Fieldwork about Han Cotton Farmers in the Tarim River Basin
After the reform and opening-up,a large number of Han farmers from the central and western regions entered the Tarim River Basin and made a living by planting cotton. They have become important promoters of rural economic and social development and increasing farmers'incomes in southern Xinjiang.Han cotton farmers are an essential part of the southern Xinjiang rural population.Despite they have formed small settlement patterns,on the whole, they are embedded in rural southern Xinjiang. In daily life,Han cotton farmers and Uyghur farmers interact extensively, and have formed mutually beneficial economic relationships.Because of the acculturation, they have shared some regional cultural elements, and developed a social connection mechanism of mutual infiltration.Research found that some Han cotton farmers have settled down, gradually integrating into the southern Xinjiang rural area in economic, cultural, social, and psychological aspects, and can be referred to as"gradual integrated type."Another part of the cotton farmers remains mobile, with a deeper economic integration but insufficient integration in other aspects, and can be referred to as"not yet to be integrated type."The embedding of Han cotton farmers in southern Xinjiang rural areas shows characteristics such as being"extensive and gradually deepening""asynchronous at different levels"and"imbalanced between types".Recently, the mobility of various ethnic populations in southern Xinjiang has significantly increased, the distribution structure of industries has been rapidly adjusted and optimized, and the economic and social environment has continuously improved. Therefore,we should pay attention to the role of the mobile population in southern Xinjiang in gradually realizing the all-round embedding of all ethnic groups, and fully understand the differentiation and repeated dynamic process of embedding, improve and make new policies for aspects such as innovative production, employment and entrepreneurship, education and medical care. These are aimed to create conditions for the embedding of the mobile population, and jointly promote the Chinese path to modernization process in southern Xinjiang, and continue to expand and deepen the all-round embedding of all ethnic groups in this process.
